Kilt or no kilt?
As a lowland family, the Wardlaw Ramsays had no tradition of wearing a kilt, not even when serving in the army. During the First World War, Robert George joined the Royal Scots, and found himself training recruits alongside Alasdair Fraser. The two became friends, and after the war, Robert George married Mary Fraser, Alasdair’s sister. She had grown up in Philorth, in the Highlands, surrounded by kilted men, so was following her family tradition when she ordered tiny kilts for her daughters, and a Ramsay tartan skirt for herself. For his part, Alasdair wore a kilt every day of his life…

Wearing tiny kilts that belonged to Liz and Euphan Wardlaw Ramsay, the last of their ilk (standing behind the children).
