6. Whitehill – the old house

Whitehill house was the Ramsays’ ancestral home, though their employments required homes in Edinburgh and London, at various times. We are fortunate in having a painting of the old house which shows the medieval gateway and tower house, which survived as the back premises of the house in its Georgian phase. The new white block at the front could be seen from a great distance. During the 1820s to 1830s, the old house was lived in by Anne Wardlaw, sister to Robert Wardlaw. As a much loved aunt, she was a frequent visitor to the family in Tillicoultry.
