2. The Quest for an Heir

Sir Andrew Ramsay was a lawyer, and he took care to entail the Whitehill property, as the Ramsay family’s landed base. This was presumably to protect it from bankruptcy proceedings, as the family’s finances remained precarious from one generation to the next. This is part of Scotland’s story! Anyway, each generation had to find a male heir to succeed to the estate – leading to some complicated manoeuvres… The entail passed through females on several occasions, ensuring that the portraits of Ramsay women were preserved, along with their names.
