Charles was brother to Lady Anne, and joined the East India Company in his teens. His breakthrough came when he was sent to Dacca, where he married Elizabeth Thompson. Two of their children died young, so their parents decided to send the surviving children back to Scotland.

Flora and her sisters went to live in Tillicoultry. It was hoped that Charles would support Robert when he arrived in Calcutta; his wife Elizabeth was indeed very hospitable.
However, Charles died shortly after his arrival, so his widow and son had to sail back to England.
