Children of Robert and Louisa – A

This charming group was painted by Dubacly when the family was living in Paris, and shows Robert cuddling the large dog, with two sisters, Elizabeth (standing) and Flora, his playmates. By this time, 1853/4, there were already 6 surviving children, and the whole family is recorded on the frontispiece of the enormous Dore bible that Lady Anne presented the happy couple with on their marriage.

In the background, next to Elizabeth’s skirt is a romantic castle, surrounded by pines. The artist is evoking the children’s Scottish heritage!
