Missiri

Missiri was a resouceful Coptic courier, whose services were engaged in Cairo by Alexander Lindsay and William WR during their Tour. They were impressed by his compassion, when he purchased a mother and daughter in the slave market, and gave them money to return home. He accompanied the cousins during their travels on the Nile and their trip to St Catherine’s monastery, and he was with William WR when he died in Damascus.

William’s letters in the WWR ‘Wallet’ contain these and other details about him.

When Lindsay returned to England with William’s body, Missiri decided to stay in London, where Lindsay helped him set up as an innkeeper. He subsequently married a lady’s maid and the enterprising pair then set up a tavern in the Crimea, to serve the officers during the war. (see Letters by Balcarres WR)
