Mosses of Tillicoultry

Musci tillicoultrienses Frontispiece dedication to Lady Anne

Mosses collected on the estate of Tillicoultry by J.B.H [James B. Howison] during the year 1833.

This delightful book has tooled leather covers and gilt edged pages, but its real treasures are the 100 and more specimens of mosses collected in the course of a two month stay at Tillicoultry and arranged during leisure hours.

This specimen book was compiled by James Howison, and presented to Lady Anne in 1833, with this dedicatory letter:

The Lady Anne Ramsay
Madam,
May I venture to hope that you will pardon the liberty which I now take in requesting you to accept the accompanying volume of mosses.
They were collected during the two visits which I made to Tillicoultry, and the preserving and arrangement of them has afforded me a quiet amusement during the leisure hours of the past winter. The number of mosses is very large considering the extent of ground traversed …. and certain had I commenced my work somewhat earlier in the season a third more might have been added.

Trusting that your Ladyship will add to the many favours which has already been conferred upon me by accepting this small collection I am
With great respect
Your grateful servant
James B. Howison
