John Ramsay’s mother sent him to Groningen to study languages and acquire business skills, and some of his exercise books survive. He was a snappy dresser, and we have still have some of his tailor’s bills. The splendid coat depicted in his portrait is now part of the Scottish Museums collection. He died aged 24 and his sister inherited the Ramsay estates.
